Yellow fever is a viral illness which is most commonly spread into the blood stream by mosquitos. The virus which causes the disease is one of a group of viruses known as arboviruses (arthropod borne viruses).

Arbovirus illnesses have two phases:

bullet The first phase is when the virus is invades the host blood cells.
bullet The second occurs a few days later when the body's immune system begins fighting the infection.

The antibodies produced during the second phase of illness can cause damage to the blood vessels which explains why arboviruses often cause bleeding. After an incubation period of about three to six days fever, headache, abdominal pain and vomiting develop. After a brief recovery period, shock, bleeding and signs of liver and kidney failure develop. Liver failure is associated with jaundice hence the name "yellow fever". Many yellow fever infections go unrecognised and those who do recover do so completely and are immune thereafter. However, severe and life threatening illness is not uncommon and Overall about 5% of Yellow Fever patients die.

There is currently no cure for yellow fever but fortunately it is one of the few arboviruses where vaccination is available.

All travellers going to endemic areas will require a yellow fever vaccination certificate and travellers going to some parts of Asia will also require a certificate. This certificate is mandatory for entry into certain countries; in particular East Africa. It is recommended that the traveller carries the certificate along with his or her passport when travelling to and from countries.

The Independent General Practice is a registered yellow fever centre and will issue you with your international certificate of vaccination. Immunity usually starts about ten days after vaccination and can last for ten years.

After ten years a booster is required which is effective immediately and lasts for another ten years.

There are two basic actions that can help to protect you from typhoid fever:

bullet Get vaccinated against typhoid fever.
bullet Avoid risky foods and drinks.

Watching what you eat and drink when you travel is just as important as being vaccinated. This is because the vaccines are not completely effective. Typhoid vaccines are effective after two to three weeks, immunity lasts up to three years. This vaccine sometimes induces a mild form of the illness which can be quite unpleasant in a few cases.

All vaccines administered by The IGP are carried out by fully qualified GPs & unlike some Travel Clinics, we do not charge patients a consultation fee on top of the vaccination price.

* Please be aware that for full immunity some vaccination courses, with more than one vaccine required, may take up to a month or longer. Please, also be aware that many vaccinations will not become fully effective until around 10 - 14 days after the course completion. It is strongly advised that you leave plenty of time to complete the course before your trip. Intervals between different vaccines or doses are recommended, Which allows time for antibodies to be produced and any reaction to the vaccine to subside.
